Kiah’s different versions throughout the secondary and tertiary design process. Developing the interior shapes of her design helped me determine more about their background. By landing on the butterfly-like armor, this kicked off my worldbuilding, answering the why of the design. The other designs would have all served similar purposes, but altered Kiah’s origin story and the lore of their world.

Character silhouettes inspired by a mood board evoking mechanical, futuristic, and tech-oriented vibes. Characters were kept mainly feminine, each having protruding electronic devices. I wanted it to be implied that each figure could be quick-moving and able to float or fly. To ensure this I focused on slimmer, lightweight shapes with blocky, sharp angles, as well as devices aiding fast movement (sharp legs, wings, rocets, etc.). This first phase is where Kiah’s design appears, later taken through the rest of the design process. Phases of secondary and tertiary design can be seen below.

Kiah is a member of a military faction sent from Earth to a newly discovered planet. The planet is inhabited by insects beyond their typical size on Earth, triple the size of humans. Kiah’s job is to aid in crossing the tropical terrain and protecting the group against threats. Their butterfly-like armor camoflages with the vibrant environment and deceives the large creatures that call it home.
